Q. 자기 소개 및 취미 생활
A. 안녕하세요 저는 이진우 교수님 연구실 석사과정 한재훈입니다. 2021년 봄에 대학원 일원이 되었고, 졸업을 앞둔 마지막 학기에 감사하게도 연구실 일원들이 이 달의 대학원생(인기투표)으로 추천해 주셔서 인터뷰를 받게 되었습니다. 취미는 가보지 않았던 카페에서 커피 마시는 것이고 연구실 일원들과 운동하는 것도 좋아합니다.
Q. 연구 소개 and 흥미로운 연구
A. 저는 2021년 KISTI 위탁 연구를 수행했고, 해당 연구를 졸업논문으로 작성 중에 있습니다. 연구 제목은 “스마트카드 빅데이터를 활용한 승객의 시간대별 버스 선택 행태에 대한 이해”이며, 승객의 스마트카드 버스 이용 데이터를 균일한 시간대별로 분석하여 통행시간(in vehicle travel time), 대기시간(waiting time), 요금(fare)과 같은 버스의 특성에 대해 승객의 선호도를 도출하고 화폐가치(monetary value)로 정량화하는 연구입니다.
제가 수행한 교통수단 선택 분야(mode choice)도 흥미로운 주제이고 저희 연구실 구성원들이 연구하고 있는 자율주행 및 전기차, 도시항공교통(UAM), 재해(disaster), 안전(safety), 교통시설(infrastructure) 등도 굉장히 흥미로운 주제들입니다. 교통은 어떠한 연구를 수행하더라도 타 분야 대비 많은 사람들이 혜택을 누릴 수 있다는 점이 큰 매력인 것 같습니다. 졸업 이후에 연구직에 종사한다면 사람들의 생활과 밀접하게 연관되어 있는 대중교통 또는 안전 분야를 연구해 보고 싶습니다.
Q. 연구 성과
A. 현재까지는 논문으로 인한 성과는 없고 졸업 이후에 취업 준비를 병행하면서 저널에 기고할 예정입니다.
Q. 기억에 남는 학회나 발표 소개 or 학회 후기
A. 제 84회 대한교통학회 학술발표회에 발표자로 참여한 것이 가장 기억에 남는 것 같습니다. 제 연구 내용을 학계에 있는 분들에게 처음으로 말하는 자리여서 떨렸고, 발표 제한 시간을 지키느라 많은 연습이 필요했습니다. 발표 전에는 학회 발표에 대한 두려움이 컸었는데 이제는 발표 자리에 대해서 큰 부담 없이 발표할 수 있을 것 같습니다. 아직 발표자로 참여하지 않으신 분들은 꼭 추천드립니다!
Q. 우리 대학원에서의 경험 중 기억 남는 일
A. 연구실 첫 학기에 연구과제를 위해 도미니카 공화국에 다녀온 일이 가장 기억에 남습니다. 도미니카 공화국의 도로 유지관리 방법을 컨설팅하는 과제였는데, 한국과 다른 업무 처리 방식과 회의 분위기를 경험할 수 있었습니다. 문화적으로는 유럽의 영향을 받은 건물 양식과 음식으로 인해 유럽과 도미니카 공화국의 매력을 같이 느낄 수 있었습니다. 추후에 팬데믹 상황이 종식되면 해외출장과 해외 학회 참여에 대한 기회가 많이 열릴 텐데 많은 분들이 경험해 보셨으면 합니다.
Q. 우리 대학원의 장점 및 전망
A. 다양한 연구분야의 교수님들과 학생들이 있어서 연구적인 협업을 쉽게 할 수 있습니다. 또한 물리적으로 연구실 간에 벽을 없애고 교류를 장려하여 화기애애한 분위기인 것도 저희 대학원의 큰 장점이라고 생각합니다.
Q. 대학원 다니면서 스트레스 푸는 방법
A. 연구가 재미있어서 큰 스트레스는 없었지만 힘들 때는 연구실 구성원들과 커피를 마시거나 같이 운동하는 것으로 스트레스를 풀었습니다.
Q. 미담
A. 저희 연구실은 누군가가 과제로 힘든 일이 있으면 돕고 연구의 방향성에 대해 같이 고민합니다. 또한 번거롭거나 힘든 일이 있으면 누구든지 솔선수범해서 하려는 분위기가 있고, 교수님께서는 학생들의 학과생활과 연구에 대해 진심으로 격려해 주시고 지도해 주셔서 긍정적인 에너지가 넘칩니다. 구체적인 미담 사례는 아니었지만 저희 연구실 구성원 전부를 미담사례로 추천하고 싶었습니다.
Q. Self-introduction (including hobbies)
A. I’m Hui Zhi, Malaysian, a master's final year student from TOPS lab. Into my sixth year at KAIST and I still enjoy the campus a lot. I love sports but it is unfortunate that due to corona a lot of facilities are closed now. I enjoy meeting and talking to new people while with closer friends I like being the listener.
Q. Introduce your research
A. I’m researching the energy efficiency of electric vehicles (EV). With the data collected from the electric vehicle drivers in South Korea, I estimate the energy consumption with electric vehicles and investigate the factors influencing it. My thesis title is “climate influence on EV energy consumption” and targets to observe how temperature influences the EV energy consumption in terms of climate control (Heating, ventilation, and cooling (HVAC) and battery thermal management system (BTMS)).
Q. Research results (paper, patent, etc.) or in progress
A.The research has some interesting insight into BTMS energy consumption. Generally, the battery management system is observed and measured solely with the battery pack alone. This time, we collect the data from electric vehicles and estimate the BTMS from a macroscopic view rather than a controlled experiment and theoretical calculation. It would be helpful for the online and real-time battery energy consumption in EV.
Q. Introduce your memorable conference, presentation
A. I had a great experience at Korea Transportation Conference held in Jeju this year. It was the first time for this conference to hold an international session and I get to meet and share with other international elites with our presentation. I’m grateful to see that foreigners gradually have more opportunities in this area alongside the Koreans. I hope that this session will continue and expand further in the future.
Q. Reasons for Cho Chun Shik Graduate Shcool admission of Green Transportation
Coming from a mechanical engineering background from KAIST, I was about to enter ME for master’s study as well. However, during the transition break, I ponder about my future and thought that rather than doing what I’m comfortable at, I should do what sparks my interest. I came upon CCS GT website and met my current advisor. I found that our TOPS lab research field is very upfront, dealing with big data transportation planning and hybrid-electric truck and vehicle, Daejeon TRAM system that is on-demand, challenging, and stimulating. After an interview with my prof and without hesitation, I decided to convert to GT.
Q. Advantages and Prospects of Cho Chun Shik Graduate School of Green Transportation
A. The future of transportation is sustainability planning from now. Seeing how GT forms a collaborative community of graduate students across the disciplines, provides the latest advanced courses and training to the students, I believe GT will grow exponentially in the coming years.
Q. What do you remember from your experience at Cho Chun Shik Graduate School of Green Transportation?
A. Actually, because of the corona period, there aren't many activities held. The main part of it consists of going to the lab, attending online courses, the fluctuating working shift, and measures due to corona… Research-wise, maybe from loathing to do programming before joining master, to being able to utilize it and adapt to other languages, I am truly thankful to be able to overcome my fear and also prof and mentor who provide the opportunity and encouragement all the time.
Q. How to relieve stress while attending graduate school?
A. Jogging has always been my to-go whenever I am stressed. It helps to clear my mind when I am overwhelmed. Those problems that engulf my thoughts are lifted as I get more fatigue. Perhaps it is a kind of pain diverting mechanism. Nonetheless, I feel much better after every jog. However, when the workload is burdensome and I have no energy left to exercise, I find my tiny joy in snacking. They help me to become a bit more productive in work and feel a bit happier with sweets.
